Hemolytic uremic syndrome associated with Streptococcus pneumoniae.
he hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) is characterized by the simultaneous occurrence of the triad of acute renal insufficiency, microangiopathic hemolytic anemia and thrombocytopenia. The HUS is the most common cause of acute renal failure in infants and young children in western countries. It could be classified into diarrhea positive, D+ (typical) or diarrhea negative, D(atypical) HUS. In Europ...
متن کاملStreptococcus pneumoniae infection and hemolytic uremic syndrome.
Sr. Director: Recently it has published in Nefrologia a case of haemolytic uremic syndrome associated to pneumococcal infection (SP-HUS) in a 2-year-6-month old boy with pneumonia, that required veno-venous hemodiafiltration / hemofiltration during ten days. SP-HUS is an uncommon disease whose incidence, following invasive pneumococcal infection, is estimated at 0.4-0.6 %. Its mortality rate is...

BACKGROUND To better characterize Streptococcus pneumoniae-associated hemolytic-uremic syndrome (SP-HUS), we report the largest series of SP-HUS among children in North America. METHODS We surveyed pediatric members of the Emerging Infections Network to identify SP-HUS cases. Respondents contributed clinical and laboratory features of these pediatric cases. RESULTS A total of 37 cases occur...
متن کاملConjugated Hyperbilirubinemia in a Child with Streptococcus pneumoniae-associated Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome
Conjugated hyperbilirubinemia is a rare complication of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). We report a case of a 2-year-old female with Streptococcus pneumonia-associated HUS (SP+ HUS) who developed severe cholestasis. It is important for pediatric gastroenterologists to be aware of manifestations of HUS, and that although rare, cholestasis can be one of the early findings in patients with SP+ HUS.
متن کاملGemcitabine-associated hemolytic-uremic syndrome.
BACKGROUND Gemcitabine has mild renal toxicity, but cases of gemcitabine-associated hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS) have been reported. METHODS A case is presented of a 45-year-old woman on prolonged gemcitabine treatment for ovarian cancer who developed HUS and recovered after drug discontinuation. A mini-review of the literature based on a MEDLINE search follows. RESULTS Including our own...
